Iris’s Space Tale

Play Me.

Read Me.

In a teeny tiny tale

In a land not far away

There lives a little girl

Iris is her name

Iris loves adventure

She loves to run and play

She loves to jump in puddles

So she loves it when it rains

. . . . .

Everyone who knows her

Has the same thing to say

She may be young and small

But she’s daring and she’s brave

She loves to climb tall trees

On golden autumn days

And look up at the sky

Feel the wind upon her face

. . . . .

She loves to go exploring

And discover the great outdoors

Like caves so deep they echo

And the ocean splashing the shore

She loves to play in the woods

Kicking leaves on the forest floor

She loves to be in nature

But there’s one thing she loves more…

. . . . .

Every night at 7

She goes into her room

Her parents read her stories

And sing her little tunes

They tuck her up in bed

In her warm and safe cocoon

They give her little kisses

And whisper “I love you”

. . . . .

When her parents think she’s sleeping

They creep out of her room

Iris opens her eyes

She adjusts them to the gloom

She tiptoes to her window

To get a better view

Pulls back the curtain, and there it is

The glowing, beautiful moon
. . . . .

She stares in awe and wonder

Never tires of the sight

Iris loves the daytime

But she especially loves the night

The way the moon changes shape

Depending on the light

Tonight it is a crescent

Curved and long and bright

. . . . .

She looks up at the stars

That glimmer in the sky

She finds the biggest and brightest

So big it looks nearby

She clasps her hands and whispers

“I wish that I could fly.

Starlight, please grant me my wish

To fly to the moon tonight”

. . . . .

The starlight doesn’t answer

It just sparkles instead

Iris lets out a sigh

And scratches her little head

She tiptoes across her room

And gets back into bed

Every night the same

No trip to the moon just yet

. . . . .

She decides to shut her eyes

Even though she cannot sleep

She’s wide awake and restless

She tries to count some sheep

She concentrates on warmth

And the pillow against her cheek

But then all of a sudden

From beneath her duvet she peaks

. . . . .

A light unlike any other

Is glimmering from outside

Her window appears to be glowing

Her curtains glitter and glide

Her room is suddenly sparkling

As if a disco ball were inside

She peels back her covers

Takes one two three big strides

. . . . .

Iris lets out a gasp

As she moves the curtains aside

She stands completely still

She cannot believe her eyes

Right there on her front lawn

Having travelled from the top of the sky

Is the star that she has wished on

Shining strong and sparkling bright

. . . . .

Without a second thought

Iris knows just what to do

She grabs her very best backpack

And darts out of her room

She tiptoes down the hallway

Passed the nursery, passed the loo

She heads towards the kitchen

And takes not one pack of biscuits, but two!

. . . . .

She runs down the hall

Rucksack brimming with snacks and juice

She zips up her cosiest jacket

And steps into her favourite boots

She opens up the front door

And feels the warm balm of June

She runs straight to the star and shouts

“Take me to the moon!”

. . . . .

No sooner has she said the words

They shoot into the sky

Iris holds on tightly

As they fly up fast and high

She takes a peak beneath her

And smiles as the world whizzes by

Her grin the biggest it’s ever been,

Oh what it is to fly!!

. . . . .

They fly up past the buildings

They fly up past the trees

They fly up through the clouds

The world beneath fast asleep

They fly towards the atmosphere

Iris clings on as they reach

The edge between what lies ahead

And that place called home beneath

. . . . .

With a whoosh a bang a whizz

A fizz a pop a whirl

The star and Iris push through the sphere

In a curly swirly twirl

They reach the other side

And peer down at her little world

From here it is blue and green and white

And ever so slightly curved

. . . . .

Onwards and upwards they soar

Iris looks to her left and her right

The air around her sparkles

Dazzling and bright

There are countless shooting stars

Blazing meteorites

The sky bathed in purples and blues and pinks

She’s never seen such magnificent sights

. . . . .

Iris’s eyes grow large

As she looks directly up

She’s almost at the moon!!

She cannot believe her luck

All those nights of hoping and wishing

And now just a moment above

Is that rocky, glowing orb

The place she’s been dreaming of

. . . . .

One final asteroid push

And they reach the dusty ground

Iris lets go of her star

She floats slowly down

The air is tranquil and still

She cannot hear a sound

But there’s a strong smell of cheese

And there are craters, deep and round

. . . . .

Off in the distance

She sees something green and small

It starts waddling towards her

It must only be two feet tall

Iris hops ever closer

Her curiosity pushing her toward

This funny little moon creature

She’s excited, cautious, enthralled
. . . . .

Now Iris is very clever

She reads all sorts of books

And she knows just what she sees

With a simple, single look

Its skin a vivid green

The nose a little hooked

Ears a bit too large

And antennae slightly crooked

. . . . .

“An alien!” She exclaims

As she grins from ear to ear

The alien smiles and nods

And lets out a little cheer

“I come in peace” she says

“There is nothing to fear”

She opens up her backpack

And beckons the alien near

. . . . .

She holds out a pack of biscuits

The alien looks intrigued

Iris takes a bite

The alien follows her lead

Its eyes grow big and wide

Its face happy and pleased

It grabs a bit of moon rock

Holds it out and says “cheese”

. . . . .

Iris takes it and giggles

It tastes just like cheese from home

Her and the alien eat and smile

It feels nice to not be alone

The alien takes her hand

They decide to go for a roam

They jump over craters and kick up the dust

She is getting to know the unknown

. . . . .

Me and my alien chum

We come from different places

But we get along

Whenever we’re together

We’re never glum

Oh me

And my alien chum

Me and my alien pal

He likes to call me zschudubuduhp

And I call him Al

Whenever we’re together

Everything’s swell

Oh me

And my alien pal

Me and my alien friend

We’ll be friends forever

Friends til the end

I’ll miss him when I’m home

But he can visit on weekends

My alien friend

. . . . .

Iris smiles and stifles a yawn

She’s beginning to feel rather dreamy

It’s all well and good being a space explorer

But even the best get sleepy

She decides it’s time to go back home

Back to her planet and family

She says her farewells, calls for her star

“Earth please”, she whispers sweetly

. . . . .

The journey home feels like a dream

Iris smiles all the way to her bed

What a glorious time, she thinks to herself

As she tucks herself in once again

This time she’ll dream of the things that she’s seen

Of the moon and her alien friend

She pulls up the covers, closes her eyes

And starry sleep descends.
